Toby Megaw
Toby Megaw was born in Johannesburg and moved to his father’s home in Fish Hoek, Cape Town, during his childhood.
Megaw became conscious of his artistic talent during a two year trip to London. He returned to Cape Town, where he spent five years in the drama department at Constantia Waldorf School. Set design, and the strongly three dimensional nature of drama, inspired him to attempt sculpture. Megaw further immersed himself in the sculptural after moving to the Eastern Cape to join his father, sculptor Theo Megaw. He was assisting him with the technical side of his sculpture. Megaw began his own artistic works & together he and his father have begun to establish an artistic centre on the farm. Surrounded by great volumes of rock, with few horizontal lines and no cellphone reception, Megaw finds inspiration in his quiet, simple way of life.
Megaw’s sculptural focus is two-fold. The relationship of shapes, volumes and masses to one other, and how the dynamics of the human being are expressed through form.
